What does NLNG stand for?

NLNG stands for Nigeria LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) Limited.

Who are the Shareholders of Nigeria LNG?

Nigeria LNG is a joint venture company owned by the Federal Republic of Nigeria represented by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Shell Gas B.V, TotalfinaElf and Agip.
  • NNPC owns 49% of the shares in Nigeria LNG Limited.
  • Shell Gas BV owns 25.6% of the shares in Nigeria LNG Limited

When was the company incorporated and what does it do?

Nigeria LNG Limited was incorporated on May 17, 1989 as a joint venture company, to harness Nigeria's natural gas reserves, some of which are currently being flared. The company purchases and liquefies Natural Gas for export to overseas markets.

How will the company's operations help to reduce gas flaring in Nigeria?

Nigeria is blessed with abundant reserves of associated and non-associated gas estimated  in excess of 180 tcf (trillion cubic feet). Associated gas is gas discovered along with oil. Most of this gas has previously either been reinjected into the oil wells as oil is produced or flared off. Since inception in 1999, NLNG's liquefaction plant has converted over 2 tcf  of associated gas into exported LNG product, contributing in no small way to the flare-out initiative in Nigeria.

When did production start?

First train production was in September 1999.

When was the first cargo loaded?

This first cargo was loaded in October 1999.

How many ships are currently in the fleet?

There are twenty-four ships in full operation used by the company for the export of its LNG. Thirteen are fully owned by its subsidiary Bonny gas Transport (BGT) while the other eleven are on long-term charter from other companies.

How many cargoes has the company loaded so far?

NLNG chartered vessels have so far delivered in excess of 1400 Cargoes.

How safe is the gas pipeline?

The pipeline is very thick and resistant and is made of high tension steel. It will be buried deep in the ground to prevent tampering. A cathodic protection system will prevent corrosion of the pipelines. The pipeline route will also be clearly established and marked.

Is there an early warning system to detect leakage in the gas pipeline?

The pipeline has safety valves and emergency shutdown valves. A monitoring system exists which detects any loss of gas. The system is monitored and controlled from the Central Control room in the plant.

What does BGT stand for?

BGT stands for Bonny Gas Transport Limited.
BGT is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nigeria LNG Limited. BGT was incorporated as a limited liability company on 11th December 1989 under the laws of Bermuda to purchase cryogenic vessels to facilitate the transportation of liquefied natural gas for Nigeria LNG Limited.
